CHARACTER NAME: Yuri Lowell
CANON & HISTORY: Aselia Wiki Entry
AGE: 21
CANON POINT: After getting stabbed by Sodia/falling off the tower
PERSONALITY:
Yuri is notably different than most of the protagonists we see in Tales, which can be partly credited to his age. Yuri, for the most part, has already gone through the soul searching period of his life and is much more comfortable with who he is than other teenage protagonists of the past. He’s grown up and is set in his ways. Throughout the game, his age sets him up to play mentor and older brother to the younger members of the game’s party. It also puts him in a position where he has to make difficult decisions past protagonists have not really faced.
Yuri lives a life functioning on his own sense of justice. He isn't afraid of the outward consequences that come from his acts of vigilantism, but he is concerned with how his own actions might morph him into becoming the same kind of villain he strives to rid the world of through these acts. He will do the things others are afraid to do. Having blood on his hands, serving time in jail, and risking his own neck are things he will do without hesitation. He rarely hesitates before making a difficult but necessary move, especially if it means keeping others from having to dirty their own hands. He is a man full of conviction, though he'll admit to himself when he feels conflicted, all the same. He can’t help but feel shaken when the villains of the game remind him that his actions will send him on the path to hell, just like them.
Outwardly, Yuri gives an immediate impression of being blase and sarcastic, usually teasing both friend and foe. He's nonchalant, taking a lot of things in stride with a shrug, a snide remark or a roll of his eyes. He doesn't seem to sweat a lot of the little things. He's grown up seeing a lot of strife and hardship hit those around him and himself. He has seen how the workings of the world and the government have hurt the little people of the world. The smaller hiccups (and even some of the more turbulent problems that pop up) in life are barely a blip on his radar. He doesn't approach it all with complete passivity, but he's more likely to let out a sigh and go 'Alright, alright' than make a fuss. Even getting lead far off the path of getting the blastia for the lower quarter by Estelle’s story gets accepted by him with minimal griping, even though the task is important to him.
Yuri has endless energy and is often described as a big kid. He loves playing pranks on the other party members and fondly tease them. He also states that fighting gives him more energy instead of causing him fatigue and doesn’t seem to sit still for very long even when the others need rest. It’s only in the heat of the desert that we see Yuri finally get slowed down by something. He’s an active person who can’t sit back and wait for anything. He loves to adventure, explore and experience new things with his Guild despite his laid back attitude.
Getting close to Yuri means earning a loyal and honest support system. His relationship with Estelle is a great example of this. He's become, over the course of the game, the person to make note of her troubles and approach her about them. He never judges her, only offers her words and encouragement. He believes in her like he believes in everyone on his team.
Even when he's a little harder on his teammates out of necessity, like Karol when Karol was close to falling through the cracks after seeing his hero sacrifice himself for the good of the guild, he always believes in his team. He's older than everyone but Raven, which is probably why he is doubly supportive for them, having been through the phases in life all of the others are currently struggling with, but he cares about them all genuinely. He'll go out of his way for them, even if he has his own goals. He can justify all the sidetracking he has to do along the way thanks to his ever-growing crew, but he doesn't mean to mind any of it one bit.
He keeps his own problems to himself, trying not to let the weight of his much more adult issues weigh on his teenage team. They've already got enough on their individual plates, as far as he can see, so his own actions and their potential weight on him and his conscience are largely kept quiet until the absolute last moment.
POWERS:
Yuri is an average human, bearing very few supernatural capabilities. He has no mastery of magic like others in his party, though he does use a number of Artes, some of which have elemental aspects to them. Though elements are involved in some of his attacks, he still does not seem to make any claim or show any sign of knowing how to use magic like Rita and Estelle can.
Artes are the Tales game blanket term for special attacks and magic. The two are separated into their respective categories, which are called 'strike artes' and 'magic artes'. In Vesperia, these artes are facilitated through blastia worn by the fighter. According to Yuri, he would not be able to use artes if it were not for his blastia, meaning if it were destroyed or disabled, he would not be physically capable of performing any of his artes. His Bodhi blastia, like others, enhances his natural abilities.
'Strike Artes' also have their own categorization system to organize them by damage and TP (otherwise known as 'MP' in other game series) consumption. The three tiers are called 'base artes', 'master artes' and 'arcane artes'. These artes are learned as characters level, but are played off ICly as the characters being essentially inspired and creating new moves. Combining artes also occurs, at times, to create more complex and powerful strike artes. Passive skills that can be earned and equipped during the game or already attached to weapons the player finds can also alter and create new and more powerful artes.
In character, a number of Yuri's artes are ones learned from his time with the Knights, though his moves are characteristically and stylistically different than those of Flynn's, for example. Yuri tends to put his own flare on his moves, adding acrobatics and tricks. He also likes to incorporate melee hits into his otherwise armed attacks, often using his fists and feet wherever he can when he's going full-force on an enemy.
OTHER: Yuri is oddly good at cooking and baking. Even if he seems like an irresponsible and reckless adult to some, he's actually got a knack for cooking and seems to like teaching others, even if he won't admit it.

MAGIC ABILITY:
Wolf Familiar
Yuri will be able to summon a wolf familiar that will be able to track and fight melee, similar to Repede. Unlike traditional familiars, it won't have magical capabilities of its own. It will be limited to the capabilities of your average police dog.
He is, as previously stated, not good at magic so his ability to summon will his familiar will be very limited for a while longer than most.
PRICE:
Bodhi Blastia: As a keepsake from his previous Captain and the source of all his special abilities, the Bodhi Blastia is essential to Yuri’s current ability to fight.
ACCLIMATION:
9.
Tales of Vesperia has an underarching plot that is all about Yuri acclimating to a new life outside of the barrier protecting the city he lives in. He’s used to exploring and adapting to new life scenarios and actually seems to enjoy it. He’s got an adventurer’s spirit, is very independent and is capable of defending himself. He has an easy time navigating most unfamiliar situations and environments and will do what he has to in order to get back to his guildmates and friends.
